The cultivation of pistachio
The pistachio tree is a tree that does not grow fast and therefore is slow to enter production. It thrives in relatively deep, sandy loam, drained and calcareous soils, where it produces very tasty fruits. It has good resistance to saline soils. The pistachio tree is a xerophytic plant and tolerates drought. Does not tolerate high soil and air humidity. It also does not tolerate high underground water levels because this causes diseases of the roots and neck of trees during the winter period.
It thrives best in areas with winter cold enough to stop the lethargy of the tree’s buds. On the contrary, it requires long, dry and hot summers for the ripening of pistachios. The most suitable areas are the coastal areas with dry and hot climate, such as those of Aegina, Attica, Korinthia, Argolida, Evia, Fthiotida, Magnesia etc. The cultivation of pistachios should be avoided in areas where pockets of increased atmospheric humidity are observed because there are problems of foliar diseases. The pistachio tree thrives very well up to an altitude of 600 m. Spring frosts do not cause damage because the trees bloom late. However, if very dry weather prevails during flowering, or conversely wet and cold weather, fruit setting is reduced because pollination is adversely affected.
