Plant passports
In recent years, radical changes have been created in the agricultural area of our country in the field of crops that Greek producers choose to deal with. In this decision they were driven both by the phenomena of climate change (reduction of water resources) that turned them to less energy-intensive crops but also by purely economic yield criteria. Thus, the traditional arable crops of cotton and maize, which occupied a large percentage etc., began to give way to other new crops, such as pistachio cultivation. Many have even characterized its performance as real EL DORADO. However, the search for the “hidden treasure of the pistachio tree” hides some deadly financial risks for those who recklessly without planning and study proceed to its cultivation.
- Nurseries clean free from diseases.
- Correct choice of subject and variety.
- Correct ratio of female to male plants as well as males of suitable types for the area.
- Correct installation methodology.
Regarding the first factor mentioned above, producers should only address certified nurseries that have the ability to provide them with the APPROPRIATE PLANT PASSPORTS of the plants that sell them and not from “nurseries” who do not have any license. The correct choice of rootstock and variety, as well as the correct ratio of female to male plants as well as the installation methodology, should be done after consultation with the agronomist who cooperates with each producer. Also, legally licensed nurseries are obliged to obtain vaccines either from their own tested mother plantations, which must meet all the necessary conditions in order for the vaccines to be completely free of diseases and pathogenic microorganisms. In addition, varieties have been improved with clones that are more productive and resistant to diseases. but which inexperienced nursery growers are unable to find.
